A wonderful complement to any grape pattern silverware: American coin silver sugar spoon in the Grape pattern by Wood and Hughes, having a shell form bowl.
Dated 1855 on the back with unobtrusive small monogram (H.L.?) on the front. Grapes and leaves adorn the handle front and back. Bowl is beautifully fluted and shell-shaped. In excellent condition with a lovely curved profile.
Weighing @42 grams (1.5 ounces), this handsome spoon is approximately 6 3/8" long.
The New York firm traces its roots to William Gale, who joined with his two former apprentices Wood & Hughes to form the partnership Gale, Wood and Hughes in 1833. William Gale, Jacob Wood & Jasper Hughes Active 1833 - 1845. predecessors to the firm of Gale & Hayden and also of Wood & Hughes. Became Wood & Hughes in 1845. Hallmarked as shown "Wood & Hughes".
The soft, warm, original finish is present, with minimal hand polishing to orders avoid any surprises.
