Painted with chinese ink and watercolour on Japanese masa paper, measuring 13.5 inches long x 9.75 inches wide. This is the original painting, not a print. Signed and sealed. Certificate of Authenticity included. Copyright watermark of etsy shop will not appear in original painting.

This is inspired by the Chinese saying , "the lotus rises out of muddy waters untainted", (出淤泥而不染) which is the calligraphy on the painting.

Seeded in muddy water, the lotus manages to rise above it untainted, blooming beautifully, maintaining its utmost purity. Children raised in the most negative environment can also succeed against all odds while remaining true to themselves. People mired in this materialistic world can also rise above it and live a happy, pure and simple life.

All my art is created here in my studio in Canada, and shipped worldwide.

Frame and matting not included. The easiest way to frame an irregular sized artwork is to use a float frame. Simply insert the artwork between the two panes of glass with no matting or mounting necessary. You can buy them at Michaels, Walmart, etc . What is sumi-e?

Sumi-e is inkwash brush painting originating from China over a thousand years ago, and embraced enthusiastically in Japan, Korea and now internationally. The name sumi-e (水墨畫) literally means water+ink+painting. It is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul. East Asian ink wash painting may be regarded as an earliest form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen.


I love to leave ample white space in my Chinese ink wash paintings so as not to distract, as well as to allow room for the viewer's own imagination. This stems from 莊子 Zhuangzi's Taoist line of thinking - sometimes not doing anything is action in itself.

The delivery time within North America is back to normal.
