389 Hyena with Two Vultures Watching Lidded Jar Salt Fired 11.5” (H) x 5” (W) x 5” (D) is lidded jar vase that has a watchful hyena outside its den with two vultures watching. When I went on safari in South Africa, it was such a treat to see hyenas, considered to be one of the “big five” ugly animals—this could not be further from the truth. Hyenas are graceful in the wild, running with force and intention. They are wonderful with their babies, and care for each other in a pack. I sculpted hyenas and vultures together as both are intelligent scavengers who have such important places in the South African ecosystem. Vultures, too, have such grace in the bush. They are such magnificent birds, and have very interesting pecking orders (pun intended!). This is a salt-fired jar vase with a hyena and two vultures watching. The jar vase and the lid were thrown on a wheel and the hyena, vultures, and tree and attached to the lid, operating as a handle for the lid. The interior has a spearmint liner glaze which I intentionally drizzle on the upper outside of the sidewalls. The piece was fired in a salt kiln up to about 1600 degrees, and has a gorgeous drip on one of its sides. Would make a great center piece or a great gift for someone special.
