Antique Hampshire Pottery Melon-Shaped Hand-Painted Lidded orders Canister James Scully Taft Signed 1890's Highly Collectible
Here is a unique and subtly eye-catching antique lidded canister with darling hand painted violets and gold gilding accents. The soft melon or pumpkin shaped body is a creamy color…and seriously so soft to the touch, it reminds me of bisque.
The backstamp reads Hampshire Pottery Keene NH in circle with James Scully Taft. This old treasure was made between 1890 and 1920…and it's held up extremely well these 120+ years! No chips, cracks or repairs to either body or lid…amazing! That it still has its lid is amazing orders. There is age related crazing, wear and other antique conditions commensurate its age – review the photos for a full description of its condition. It measures approx. 6.5” / 16.5 cm at its widest point and is 6.5” / 16.5 cm tall.
Hampshire Pottery examples can be found in several museums around the country. This darling canister is a highly collectible antique treasure – and quite rare (I've not found another like it anywhere).
Maker Trivia - In 1871, Hampshire Pottery, Keene, New Hampshire was founded by James Scholly Taft and James Burnap. By 1882, the company began producing decorative art pottery for sale as souvenir and specialty items. Hampshire developed a line of colored glazed wares as early as 1883, including a Royal Worcester-type pink, olive green, blue, and mahogany. In 1904, the company began production of a variety of matt glazes including green, blue, gray, bronze and more. Hampshire Pottery continued operation thru World War I, closed temporarily, reopened and eventually closing its doors in 1923. Most pieces are marked with the Hampshire Pottery/J.S. Taft mark and occasionally an M inside an O (a tribute to Emoretta Robertson).
