Product code: Rare orders Original Antique Sunbonnet Babies Sugar and Creamer Made in Germany, Circa early 1900s, Royal Bayreuth – Highly Collectible

Here is a rare sugar and creamer set from Royal Bayreuth's Sunbonnet Babies collection, early 1900's.

Sunbonnet Babies were first introduced in 1900 in the book The Sunbonnet Babies. It was the first children's school book to use the same characters for the entire text. The stories were by Eulalie Osgood Grover, illustrated by Bertha Corbett. The children's faces were completely hidden by the sunbonnets. The children had been pictured in black and white before this time, orders but the color pictures in the book were immediately successful. The Royal Bayreuth China Company made a full line of children's dishes decorated with the Sunbonnet Babies. Some Sunbonnet Babies plates have been reproduced, but are clearly marked.

This sweet set have the 1902 light blue backmark. This dates them at least before the 1930's.

I'm in awe of the fine details of the illustrations…and how well preserved they are after over a century of gracing folks' homes.

The lid to the sugar bowl is missing, and its gold gilding on the handles has significant wear on the upper half. The creamer has normal wear to gold gilding on top rim – the gold on its handle (which has an awesome design) is surprisingly free of significant wear (save the tiny dot trim – it has wear that's rather hard to see). Otherwise both pieces are in great condition with minor signs of wear commensurate their age – no cracks, chips or repairs. Please review the photos for a full description of the condition of these pieces.

The Sugar Bowl measures 2.5 inches / 6.5 cm high and depicts the Sunbonnet Babies busy at their mending; the creamer measures 3 inches / 8 cm high and shows them doing their laundry. I do not know if these two pieces were originally a set, but they came to me as a set…so they are close buddies now.

I have other of this collection in my shop – if you'd like to purchase two or more of the Sunbonnet Babbies listings, I'd like to offer you a 5% discount…message me and we will make it happen.
