The tunnel is 4.75 miles long cut through the rock of the Housac mountain range to help create a passage from Boston orders to Upstate NY. Completed in 1875 it was at one time the 2nd longest tunnel in the world and also the first longest tunnel in the USA. Gilbert E. Maxwell (c.1866-1942) was born in Maine and then operated and owned a shop in North Adams MA. Mitchell Woodbury Co were the agents to work with Maxwell to have this hand painted transfer and stenciled plate made by the burgeoning late victorian era american tourism business. Gold is worn form decades of cloth dusting. Plates such as this were collected and displayed and not usually used for dining. (C254G 6-18-20)
