Loko is the patron lwa of voodoo priests and priestesses, healers, gardeners, and herbalists. He is the spirit of vegetation, the guardian of sanctuaries, and the personification of the trees and, as such, he has the ability to grant healing and magical properties to leaves and herbs. Loko has an extensive knowledge of the pharmaceutical use of herbs; he is the God of healing and patron of certified herbalists who always call before starting treatment.
It is said that Houngan and Mambo receive their knowledge from him. He is known for his good judgment and for his intolerance to injustice; he is often called on to be a judge during conflicts. Because of his affinity with nature, Loko Atison does not interact directly with human beings but hides in the wind and listens to people without them noticing. In this way, Loko is said to listen discretely to the intentions of people who work in the forest. He is intolerant of injustice and will exact swift vengeance upon those who summon him for his power whose intentions are not pure. Sometimes Loko appears in the form of a butterfly. He has many wives and girlfriends who are young and attractive throughout the country wherever there is vegetation. Loko is compared to an invisible Houngan with authority in all sanctuaries. Loko is also a Lwa messenger, but his main tasks relate to the vegetation of woodlands and forests. He also oversees the agricultural tools that farmers use in their daily activities.
