This is a rare solid copper Lump Hammer or Mallet dating to c1900-1910.
Designed specifically for use in munitions works, firework factories & petrol refineries where a spark would be disastrous, copper & brass tools were expensive to produce, but essential in certain industries.
This piece was found many years ago in a bunker at Thorpe Arch estate near Wetherby, Yorkshire, where munitions were produced during both World orders Wars.
A good solid hammer, it has a 4.5cm diameter cast copper head which has been deburred but not over restored.
Some surface wear & face dents as shown but still fine for many more years of use. The hickory shaft is solidly fixed & wedged.
30.5cm or 12” overall length with a 9cm long head. 1.3kg or 2lb 13oz nominal weight. Stamped code number 2940.
