What is cloisonné?
Cloisonné, the ancient craft of decorative enameling, first became popular among the aristocratic classes of Ancient Egypt and the Byzantine Empire but has roots that go as far back as the 15th century BCE. Since then, many cultures have embraced this craft, creating exclusive pieces of décor and jewelry. To this day, this technique has many secrets and takes years of studying and practice to master.
Cloisonné is known for its elaborate and colorful compositions that are achieved by mapping out a design on any decorative object (in our case it's jewelry) with fine, flexible silver or gold wires, thus creating empty compartments. To create pieces with a “stained glass” effect, we use ultra-thin slivers of enamel placed on their edges in lieu of the silver wire.
The compartments are then filled with different colored enamel powder and fired in a kiln at a temperature of about 700-800°C. Different color enamels have different melting points, so the trick for the artist is to fire it multiple times, which can take hours, and to know when it is ready, exactly, without ever taking a peek. For this, the artist needs knowledge, skill, and intuition. And it is, perhaps, why cloisonné is one of the most revered decorative art forms.
As tricky as it is, the technique of cloisonné brings stunning results, vibrant translucent colors and hypnotizing patters, which could not be achieved by other simpler techniques.
