This antique doll is quite a conversation piece (pun intended!) and had a special place in my Mother's collection for many years. Oh, the things he could tell us!
Although he has no specific markings, I've identified this ventriloquist doll as Dapper Dan, also called Danny O'Day or even, Dummy Dan from the 1930s.
Dapper Dan was made by the Ralph A. Freudlich Doll Company. He measures 20 inches in length. His head and neck are composite materials and his arms and body are stuffed cloth. He has an articulated mouth/jaw that is controlled by a string through the back of the neck. The string is no longer attached. Due to its age, the head of the doll has cracks/chips across the scalp which is hidden by the cap. There is also some paint chipping on his eyes/face. I believe he originally had composite hands which were replaced at some point with stuffed cloth hands, which show some staining. He is wearing a black flannel jacket and trousers and a cotton cap on his head. The clothing is not original but it is old and it's condition shows wear and the cap is torn in the back.
The Ralph A. Freudlich Company produced dolls in their New York City location from 1929 to 1934 and then relocated to Clinton, Massachusetts. They primarily made composition dolls but it's orders difficult to find one that is marked. Dapper Dan was created in response to the gaining popularity of vaudeville ventriloquist acts. The famous duo of Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy emerged at this time and continued to be successful on the stage into the 1970's.
Please closely view the photos as they are the best descriptors of condition.
Thank you!
